The Chair of Microbial Ecology, ZIEL - Institute for Food and Health operates in close contact with the industry and several research projects have been conducted in the applied science, targeting microbial problems and issues with practical applications. 

With our expertise in the fields of diagnostics and spoilage of food stuff we provide support in the analysis of microbial production problems. The Chair of microbial Ecology is known for highly competent, fast, and discreet assistance.

The key to evaluate and solve microbial problems within the food chain is a thorough knowledge about the causative microbiota. We have been identifying spoilage organisms for many years and most of the identifications are based on our in-house, routinely applied FTIR reference-databases, which deliver fast, reliable and affordable results

- Comprehensive analysis of the contaminating microbiota in defective products, including
Identification of bacteria and yeasts by FTIR-spectroscopy and molecular methods
o    Identification of molds by morphological and molecular methods

- Analysis of contamination routes by strain-typing with molecular techniques (RAPD-PCR)
- Trouble-shooting service for the food industry
- Consulting for microbial problems in the food production
